Pasto Carnaval de Negros y Blancos
One of the best places to travel during the month of January is a city in southwestern Colombia known as Pasto. This is where they celebrate the Carnaval de Negros y Blancos. When translated this means the Blacks and Whites’ Carnival. This is one of the oldest festivals in South America. It begins with a parade that has many colorful floats.
Australia Day is held on January 26 and is a very new holiday that has only been celebrated since the year 1994. The holiday was created in honor of the day when Captain Arthur Philiip raised the British Flag in Sydney in 1788. There are many large events held on this day one, which includes naming the Australians of the Year. There are also many festivals, concerts and firework shows to complete the holiday.
Rideau Canal Skateway, Ottawa
The Rideau Canal which is about five miles long and cuts through the downtown Ottawa area. Many refer to it as the largest skating rink in the world. If you are one who wants to skate the Rideau Canal Skateway you will need to wait until January to do so. This is when the canal is completely frozen over and will last throughout the rest of the winter months. If you do not want to pack your ice skates you are in luck as there are many different rental facilities located along the canal.
Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve
If you are traveling to Mexico you will want to see the top attraction for visitors who travel to Mexico’s central highlands. Every year there are millions of monarch butterflies that travel from eastern Canada to the forest of western central Mexico. This journey is up to three thousand miles long. The butterflies will spend the winter in hibernation in small areas of the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere in Michoacan and will then travel north again. January and February are the prime times to see these butterflies in their reserve.
If you are looking for a completely unique getaway you might want to consider traveling to the tiny village of Jukkasjarvi in northern Sweden. Here you will find a hotel that is made completely of ice and snow. It is known as the IceHotel and you might be surprised to find that the chairs and beds in the guest rooms are also made of ice and snow. You might think that this would be a cold place to sleep but the guests sleep in sleeping bags that are polar tested. Of course the activities near by are snow related activities such as snowmobiling and husky sledding.
